Jessica W - Imagining Africa Participant
Jessica Wimbley

It is Askia's belief that art and artists are capable of utilizing creativity to imagine and perceive worldwide issues in fresh and innovative ways. The development of imagination and the application of creativity to world issues allows for the possibility of new perceptions to be the source of innovative problem solving and positive conflict resolution. It is our hope that the artists selected to be a part of Imagining Africa will seek personal transformation and energetically engage in learning, perceiving and knowing Africa optimistically. We believe that the positive transformation of one individual positively contributes to a better global community, one person at a time.  Imagining Africa is a multi-phase project. Candidates must be willing and capable of committing to the entire project.

The Sierra Leone Heritage Project (SLHP) is an AYM humanities program focusing on the interpretation of postwar Sierra Leone public policies and proclamations through conferences, cultural festivals and publishing, with emphasis on visual arts and photojournalism. SLHP is committed to the monitoring and evaluating of Sierra Leone’s commitment to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The body of information derived from this project will primarily benefit students in Sierra Leone with the aim of galvanizing this constituency for the promotion and achievement of national UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Contributions to the project will come from national humanities scholars and other informed citizens with ideas that would mobilize, inform and educate the public, utilizing national and international media. This is a continuum of the Representations of Violence: Art about the Sierra Leone Civil War project.
